What is a Hospitalist?
A hospitalist is a physician who is responsible for the care of patients in place of their primary care physician in a hospital setting. Hospitalist manage their patient's care from admission through discharge, then transfers responsiblity to the patient's personal physician when the stay ends.
In today's society, patients admitted into the hospital tend to have more complex problems. This is due to the fact that certain conditions that previously requied hospitalization are now handled on an outpatient basis. Today, an increased number of elderly people are hospitalized with chronic age-related illnesses. Hospital-based physicians are better able to attend to patients, respond to their problems and navigate the hospitals' increasingly complex systems.
The use of hospitalists is an effort to reduce the length of hospitalizations and lower medical costs without compromising the patient's quality of care or causing patient dissatisfaction. A hospitalist also helps the patient's primary care physician when they cannot service their patients in both an office and hospital setting sufficiently.
